Historic Elegance: How to Achieve a Victorian Era Inspired Bedroom

According to English Heritage, “The Victorian era spans the 63 years of Queen Victoria’s reign over Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901.” When people think of this era, images of voluminous skirts, elegant floral designs, high-class parties, and sumptuous architecture may come to mind. It is no wonder then that many in the modern age seek to be inspired by that beautiful era.
Some may want to focus on emulating the fashion. Some love the architecture and venture out to look for a home from that era. Others take inspiration from the furniture that exudes character and want that for their homes. Whatever the case, the Victorian era has many qualities that many find inspiring. So, we at Ever Lasting are here to give you some ideas on how to bring the Victorian era to your room so you can live in elegance!

Start With Sleepwear
One easy way to incorporate Victorian elegance into your bedroom is through your sleepwear. One of the most fundamental parts of Victorian clothing is something called a chemise.
According to an article by the Historic Hudson Valley, “Chemises…were made of white cotton or linen. The chemise was the primary layer of clothing all women wore. Since it was the only part of the wardrobe to touch the body directly, this loose-fitting garment absorbed sweat and kept the outer garments (which were much more complicated to launder) clean.”
They are simple yet beautiful pieces of clothing that you can add to your wardrobe for that classic Victorian look. You can easily find something similar online that matches your style. While they may not be made to have a corset and clothes layered over them, you can achieve something similar to what they would have worn in the Victorian era when going to bed.

According to an article written by R.S. Glass Design Limited, popular motifs in the Victorian times include “...plaids, stripes, damask, and flowers.”
- Focus on Color: One of the most popular colors in the Victorian era, according to an article written by Tara S. Sims for The TMC Library, was the toxic yet vibrant “Scheele’s Green”. She continues, stating, “This vibrant and long-lasting green dye, far superior to other greens available at the time…It wasn’t long before these dangerous heavy metals infiltrated their way into almost every aspect of Victorian life, being present in everything from sweets and wallpaper to toys and medicines, as well as most dyes and paints utilized for decorative and aesthetic purposes in clothing and fashion accessories.”
Fortunately for us, there are many similar colors that are not made of a material that would kill you! So, if you want a room that screams Victorian, go for green!
