Colour Psychology: Choosing the Right Hues for Your Bedroom

Colour plays an important role in our everyday lives and how it affects our moods. Interior designers find it one of the most challenging parts with their clients, especially when said colour may not match the aesthetic they’re going for. For the most part, colour is also attached to certain aesthetics and what kind of that aesthetic brings. An example could be of how the colour combination of white and pink are often associated with the coquette aesthetic; as a result, the white and pink colour hues are often associated with feeling soft and elegant, or rather princess-like. On the other end of the scale, we have the purple and black colour combination, associated with the goth or dark academia aesthetic. This colour combination can be associated with feeling cool and mysterious.

Despite that, we shouldn’t just focus on colours only, we should focus on how the combination itself creates the aesthetic and how that aesthetic’s hues bring out a certain vibe for your bedroom. Orange hues paired with the cottagecore aesthetic may bring out a summer or energetic vibe to your room; meanwhile the colour blue and cooler hues can also be used during the summer but to a cooling effect, something related to making you feel like afternoon naps are the best. If these kinds of effects are what you’re looking for when choosing the right hues for your bedroom, then keep on reading to learn more.

Bright Hues : Red, Orange, Yellow For Energizing

When thinking about how hues and colours affect our mood, the first thing we all like to jump to is how bright colours do that. More than often, in branding and colour theory, brighter hues are used to symbolise freshness, energy and joyfulness. These are all positive associations with the colours of course, but one wrong hue and it could create a completely different mood. So what’s the best way to make sure we don’t choose the wrong hue and ruin the mood of the bedroom?

The answer is to picture a lemon or any vibrant coloured fruit. When you think of oranges and yellows, remember the colour of limes and lemons, or the clementines that you eat during the summer. Think of the red insides of the watermelon and how refreshing it feels to have the first bite during the summer. Keep these hues in mind as you gather inspiration for how to energise your room.

If you need any more suggestion, here’s a list of fruits and their hues/colours:

  • Lemon (yellow)

  • Lime (bright green)

  • Watermelon insides (bright red)

  • Clementines (orange)

  • Pineapple insides (bright yellow)

  • Strawberries (bright red)

And of course, these hues go well together so feel free to mix and match to best suit your energising room!

Try these for fruity hues:

We can’t talk about brighter hues and energising colours without bringing up the cooler hues. The cooling or rather cooler hues ( get it?), serves to destress us, calm us down and unwind at the end of the day. If this is what you want for your bedroom then keep on reading!

Approaching the subject of what hues would make us feel calm and steady is actually easier than finding the right colours for finding one for energising hues. A lot of the time, our eyes often gravitate to cooler hues such as baby blue, lavender purple or neutral green. The hues mentioned more than often relax the muscles of our eyes a little and we don’t feel a sort of strain when gazing at it, which is why neutral hues such as a beige and brown are often a popular colour choice when decorating bedrooms. However, a relaxing atmosphere can also be achieved through cool hues. Some examples of this are:

  • Pastel blue, purple or green

  • Lavender purple

  • Navy blue

  • Neutral green

  • Violet purple

All these hues serve to allow us to unwind, make us feel allured to having a nap in the middle of the day. Of course, this works best if you want your bedroom to feel like mostly a place of rest. If this is the case, also make sure that your desk and office set up are not in the same room as yours as you will always feel like you need to take a nap from all the cool hues you’re surrounded with.

Cooler hues for your room:

Cooling Hues: Blue, Purple, Green for Calming

Neutral Hues: Beige and Brown for Professionalism

We’ve talked about energising hues and calming hues, but how about neutral hues or rather balancing hues. These hues are something that are considered an all-rounder and versatile type, at the right moment it’ll make you feel energised and productive, but also when you need it, it’ll feel calming and relaxing. Introducing the beige and brown hues for your all in one bedroom needs. Maybe you’re sharing a place with someone which means that your bedroom will also be where you’re doing most of your work. In this case, using beige and brown hues are the perfect combination for the versatile bedroom.

We do recommend that you keep the room simple, with minimal decor, focusing more on the hues and colours of the room. In this way, you can make sure that the room is clean enough for you to concentrate during work periods, but not too busy so that you can relax in your room. We recommend that you play around with other neutral colours too such as neutral pink, blue or green, which would match great with darker versions of themselves. Beige also works great with white to achieve a cleaner look so that you won’t feel tired about cleaning your room, even as you take a break.

Alt Hues: Black, Indigo and Crimson for Mystery

Sometimes you feel like breaking out of the norm, no more energetic or cool or even just professionalism. Sometimes you want to feel mysterious and nonchalant, which is what the alt hues are here for! The alt hues consist of mostly dark colours such as indigo, crimson, deep blue; all of which are often paired together with black. Opposite of most of what we’ve discussed, the aim of alt hues is to create a sense of mystery and the feeling of darkness or coldness, maybe this type of vibe is what you’re looking for in a room!

We can also alternatively call this alt hue: the dark academia aesthetic. When you feel like a witch in a magical school, brewing up potions and learning incantations. This is of course not to be confused with the gothic aesthetic; though very closely related, the alt hues focus on just being accepting of the darkest parts of yourself and being introverted and mysterious. Alt hues are for those who want something a little different, but nothing too drastic, just simple and makes them look like the darkness is there to help them rather than accentuate their personality.

If you’re confused about where these alt hues could go, here are some suggestions:

  • Curtains

  • Pillows

  • Bathrobes

  • Duvets

Final Thoughts

The psychology of colours is a large field of study that even some designers find it hard to wrap around. What colours may be suited for some situations, may be different for other situations. This is the very same instance when designing for bedrooms. Although certain hues are perfect to create a calming scenario in a bedroom, other hues may induce stress or even represent something else entirely different. Other than its deeper psychological effects, hues also affect ourselves physically. While some hues cause strain in our eyes when gazed at for too long, some other hues relaxes our eye muscles and sometimes even induce sleepiness. One could say that the psychology of colours goes beyond the mental state and transcends to our physicality, that hues affect us more than we think it does. Again, we recommend that you mix and match and experiment with hues to see which ones would fit you the best. After all, the culture and norms you grow up around may very well affect the way you choose to decorate your room with specific hues.

We hope that this guide to colour psychology and hues has helped you figure out what kind of vibe you want your room to be.
