Grunge & Punk Rock Room Decor: The Ultimate Aesthetic Guide

Grunge Punk aesthetic has entered the chat! This has been one of my dream room aesthetics when I was in middle school and now still one of my favorite aesthetics. Grunge is more than a room aesthetic, it comes down to style and music culture as well. However, in this article we will discuss tips on how to style your new edgy room into a grunge aesthetic.
What Is the Grunge Aesthetic?

What exactly is a grunge style? The grunge style is a effortless cool aesthetic inspired by the 90's punk rock and grunge music scene. Here are some key elements of the grunge aesthetic:
- Dark and muted colors like black, grey and earthy tones such as deep greens and dark brown
- Vintage pieces like worn out aged decor
- Layered textures like flannel, metal accents and distressed wood
- Band posters like nirvana, and vintage band tees
- Lots of DIY and thrifted decor like upcycled furniture, and second hand finds like room decor.
- Dim and moody lighting like fairy string lights, candles and warm lighting over all.
Why Is The Grunge Aesthetic Popular?
The grunge aesthetic can be budget friendly, effortlessly cool and easy to personalize for your room! What makes this particular aesthetic a popular room aesthetic?
- Nostalgia: With old styles such as vintage and retro styles coming back and becoming popular again, so does this 90's inspired aesthetic. It inspires that nostalgic and carefree vibe.
- Authenticity and Affordability: Grunge decor embraces imperfections. It allows you to create a space that feels unique and personal. Also, since this aesthetic is inspired by thrifted touches as well, your able to DIY most of your room decor from upcycled materials.
- Music and Alternative Culture: This aesthetic is popular for fans of alternative rock, punk and grunge music. It is a way they can express their passion for this genre of music.

This aesthetic has evolved over the years, creating many sub styles of this aesthetic. Here are different styles of grunge aesthetics:
- Classic 90's/ Punk Grunge
- Soft Grunge
- Pastel Grunge
- Gothic grunge
1. Classic 90's/ Punk Grunge

This is the classic "original" style of the grunge aesthetic inspired by alternative bands such as Nirvana and other popular punk/rock bands. The vibe of this style of grunge is effortless and messy in a fun way. It is supposed to bring a slight feel of chaotic-ness and individualism. Some key features of this style are:
- A dark and muted color palette such as browns, deep rich greens, black and greys. Dark deep reds and purples as well.
- Some choice of furniture style is worn out pieces and distressed wood.
- Lots of flannel patterns which can be in bed sheets or a blanket, ripped fabrics and vintage band posters.
- Layered elements such as mix-matched bedding and patterns such as this Dark Plaid Goblin Bedding Set.
- Decor in the room like vinyl's, thrifted items and old cassette tapes.
Overall the vibe is slightly chaotic but in a cozy way.

2. Soft Grunge

Soft Grunge is a more popular take on this aesthetic because it is the most modern take of this style. It is based off the early tumblr era, 2010's fashion era of mustaches and a touch of indie and grunge. A nice modern blend of classic grunge and indie. Some key elements of this style of grunge are:
- More of a neutral color palette and light colors such as beige, dusty pink, washed out dark colors.
- Has a mix of soft and edgy decor such as fairy lights and other warm lighting for a moody yet cozy glow.
- Decor such as vintage floral patterns, delicate lace and sheer curtains, vintage mirrors like this Vintage Aesthetic Wooden Wall Mirror , dried flowers in mason jars for a romantic touch
- This style is still on the moodier side but has soft touches like lit candles, poetry book shelf and DIY wall art.

This take on the grunge aesthetic can sometimes be mixed up with soft grunge but this style is more of a cute take on this aesthetic. It is a blend of kawaii, tumblr and alt fashion. It is soft and cute but does not leave behind the edge if grunge. Some key elements of this style are:
- Pastel colors such as pink, lavender, and blue blended with dark colors such as grey and black.
- Elements such as plushies like sanrio characters or cute pillows like this Teddy Flower Pillow or this Pink Butterfly Pillow, bright decor like LED lights, painted or sticker covered furniture for an artsy look.
- Retro elements like neon signs, a record player, vintage old school alarm clock.
- Polaroid pictures taped on the mirror or on furniture.
- For bedding this style has pastel colored sheets, moody accent pillows and lace details to add to the soft look.

4.Gothic Grunge

I would say this is one of the coolest versions of the grunge aesthetic. This take is based of gothic subculture and dark academia. It is mysterious, dark with a poetic touch. Some key elements are:
- Dark moody color tones such as deep red and burgundy, dark purples as well and deep rich colors.
- Vintage or gothic inspired bedding and furniture such as this French Solid Wooden Black Bed Frame . Gothic candle sticks and skull decor.
- Dark florals and mixed patterns, lace for a vintage touch.
- Fairy lights, dark colored candles or dim LED lights for a warm yet haunting glow.
I think of the world of Tim Burton, a dark and haunting space yet you can't help but feel cozy and warm.
