Fitted vs Flat: What Sheets to Use in Your Bedroom?
When purchasing bedding, there are so many important things to consider: Color, Comfort, Style, Price, etc. But while many are focused on the blanket or duvet, many seem to overlook one of the most important pieces... your sheets! While there are only the options of fitted or flat, each has its own perks and we all have our own preferences. Keep reading to find out which one is best for you! What makes a sheet Fitted or Flat?
The main difference between the two depends simply on one factor: the corners of the sheet! While flat sheets are perfectly flat, fitted sheets have elastic in the corners to allow for the sheet to fit more snugly on the bed.
What are the Pros and Cons?
There are plus sides to whichever sheet you choose to purchase! On the one hand, Flat sheets are good if you aren't sure which size of sheet you need for your bed. If you're also looking to change your mattress or overall are looking for multipurpose sheets, Flat is probably your best bet. Fitted however stays better in place on bed, and is less likely to move if you fidget in your sleep. Because it better stays put, it also tends to avoid getting too many wrinkles. However, our fitted sheets work best for a mattress around 10in. If yours is thicker or you're not sure, you may want to stick with a flat sheet.
DIY Fitted Sheets
EASY DIY:
While it is more convenient to buy a fitted sheet, we went ahead and found some DIY options to try out! A simple fix is to purchase a bed elastic to pull in the corners of your flat sheet and allow for a better fit. This is probably the easiest option; the elastics can be found in online stores for about $15 and are easy to throw on your sheets.
EXPERIENCED DIY:
If you're feeling crafty and looking for a more permanent solution, you can also sew the elastic directly onto your fitted sheet. This is definitely a more challenging process, but you can check out this video by Mimzy for a step by step guide!
Final Takeaways
To recap, a fitted sheet is a great idea for those who tend to toss and turn at night, and are looking for soft comfortable bedding that is easy to put on and keep in place. If you're unsure of your mattress size or are looking for multipurpose sheets, a flat sheet might be your best bet.
